Czech films that have been somewhat forgotten...

diŕected by Karel Kachyňa, Czechoslovakia 1990, 109 min.

According to Ota Hofman's script, the proven Karel Kachyňa directed the war drama taking place in the Nazi Jewish ghetto. The focus of the film is the French mime Moreau, who is forced by the Nazis to stage a theater performance with child prisoners. In the eyes of the expected inspection of the International Red Cross, this should become a business card of the humane conditions in the ghetto. However, the artist decides to take the fairytale play About the Gingerbread House as a true statement about harsh, shocking reality...
Tom Courtenay excels in the title role. Another interesting British actor in the international cast is his compatriot Freddie Jones in the role of pianist Rheinberg. The impressive story is inspired by the performance of the opera Brundibár, which was successfully performed in the Terezín ghetto from September 1943 to the autumn of 1944, also for the mentioned inspection of the humanitarian organization.
