The musical group FruFru is an unmistakable musical ensemble that has been a constant presence on the Czech music scene with a solid fan base throughout the Czech Republic since the year 2000. FruFru was founded in 2000 as an occasional artistic entity primarily dedicated to improvisation at exhibitions and private events. The musicians received a great response, establishing FruFru as a genuine music band in the Czech music scene.
FruFru presents a unique musical style that combines elements of pop, rock, funk, jazz, all seasoned with a cabaret atmosphere and decadently theatrical elements. To top it off, FruFru offers highly distinctive and unconventional lyrics authored by Václav Bartoš, who earned his reputation with the band Pavel Fajt's Pluto.
In February 2003, FruFru released their debut album titled "Hmotný svět," featuring lyrics by Jan Volf, Allen Ginsberg, Georg Trakl, Václav Bartoš, and the Evenki tribe.
In December 2005, FruFru released their second album "Nevěř tichu," for which they were nominated for the genre award of the Anděl 2005 popular music academy. Most of the lyrics were written by the band's leader, Václav Bartoš, while others were contributed by Ditmar Chmelař, Kryštof Ewanče, and anonymous authors from the 16th century.
Their third album, titled "Až přiletí tučňák..." was released in January 2009. The album featured guest musicians such as Gabriela Vermelho (Maraca - vocals, violin, quintone), Dorotka Barová (Tarafuki - vocals, cello), František Kučera (ex-Čikori - trumpet, cornet), and Jakub Vejnar (Baterky - Baterky, Aneta Langerová, and more).
In 2013, their most recent album to date, "Freak Show," was released under the Indies record label.
Throughout their active years, FruFru performed on hundreds of stages in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Germany, Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, the United Kingdom, and France. They appeared at festivals like The Mayor's Thames Festival London, Szighet Budapest, Bardentreffen Nürnberg, Angermünde, East goes West Leer, World & Ethno Levice Rock for People, Trutnov, Planet Roxy, Králíky, Boskovice, Zámostí, Mezi Ploty, Prázdniny v Telči, Febiofest, Globalbeat, Klikkfest N. Zámky, and more.
The band actively toured until 2018, after which Václav Bartoš began focusing on other projects, particularly the Kucharski group.
In the spring of 2023, Václav Bartoš was approached by the programming team of the Zámostí Festival, asking if he would prepare a special project for the festival. Václav had long considered the revival of FRU FRU, and he prepared a performance for Zámostí with a new star-studded lineup, new arrangements, and fresh energy. The concert was a great success, satisfying both the musicians and the audience, leading the band to continue their concert activities and prepare a new album.
